Family medicine physicians provide comprehensive, continuous healthcare to all members of the family throughout the course of their lives. By building relationships based on communication and respect, these physicians gain a deeper understanding of the whole person, including the range of physical, emotional and socioeconomic factors that influence a person’s health status.

The Department of Family & Community Medicine integrates biological, clinical and behavioral sciences to train our physicians to provide outstanding levels of patient-centered and culturally appropriate care.

Santina J G Wheat

Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine

I am currently a core faculty member of the Northwestern Family Medicine residency program. In this position I supervise our residents on OB service, in outpatient clinic, and during their HIV training. I also oversee their training in procedures and assist in the research curriculum My clinical areas of interest include women’s health, obstetrics, and urban underserved medicine

Adam W Bennett

Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine

I practice primary care sports medicine, a newer field geared towards the non-surgical management of muskuloskeletal complaints. Currently a team physician for the Chicago Bears (NFL) and US Soccer Men’s National Team.

Dorothy A Dschida

Lecturer of Family and Community Medicine

I am currently an assistant program director with the NW Family Medicine residency program. In this position I supervise our residents on the inpatient adult and newborn services. My clinical areas of interest include women’s health, obstetrics, and urban underserved medicine.

Michael F Fleming

Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Fleming’s research and training programs have focused on testing behavioral interventions in community-based primary care practices. He has also published dozens of studies on phospholipids, alcohol biomarkers, chronic pain, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, pharmacotherapy trials, epidemiological studies and educational interventions.

John L Gatta

Clinical Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Gatta is a quanitative methodologist, specializing in building capacity within organizations to engage in research, evaluation, and quality improvement efforts. He is the Director of Research for the Department of Family & Community Medicine, and serves as course director for intermediate and advanced biostatistics courses offered through the Graduate School.

Michael E McGarry

Clinical Instructor of Family and Community Medicine

I currently serve as the Clinical Head of Sports Medicine for the United States Navy Recruit Training Command/CAPT James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center. I am Board Certified in Family Medicine and Fellowship trained in Sports Medicine.

Anuj Kumar Shah

Clinical Instructor of Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Shah is an Associate Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency at Erie Family Health Center-Humboldt Park. He practices full spectrum family medicine at Erie, a federally qualified health center on the west side of Chicago. Dr. Shah has completed fellowships in both Faculty Development and Integrative Medicine, and a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Community Medicine. His interests include providing high-quality, compassionate primary care in underserved populations with a focus on affordable, holistic approaches to care for the body, mind, spirit, and community.

Gail Lynn Patrick

Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Patrick works with Asian Human Services Family Health Center, a federally-qualified health center, in West Ridge.

Katherine Wright

Research Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Wright’s research examines the effectiveness of health and education policy measures while considering the mediating and moderating factors that influence population metrics. Within this context, she has also developed new methodological approaches to account for missing data, and has extensively analyzed large scale data such as the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Michael K Rakotz

Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine

Dr. Rakotz oversees efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease for the American Medical Association. A practicing family physician for more than 20 years, Dr. Rakotz recently served as the Director of Population Health and Virtual Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group. In 2014, his office was one of 30 sites in the U.S.to earn the designation as a Million Hearts® Hypertension Control Champion. In addition to his position in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, he is a Fellow for the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology (HIT).
