Whiten Teeth at Home or in the Dentist’s Office?

You can get the shine back on your smile with a variety of teeth-whitening methods. There are pros and cons to brightening up at the dentist’s office or with an at-home kit.

At-Home Products

Whitening rinses. They’re easy to use. All you do is swirl it around in your mouth for a minute.

The whitening agent in the product is in contact with your teeth for just a short time, so your choppers get brighter gradually. Rinses can help prevent new stains after you whiten your teeth.

Whitening toothpaste. It has ingredients that remove surface stains with gentle brushing and may provide gradual brightening. But some people get sensitive teeth if they use these products.

Gel strips. You usually put them on your teeth once a day for up to 2 hours. Depending on how strong the product is, you may need

Dentists, orthodontist have reopened but ask questions before you go

Dentists and orthodontists reopening across metro Detroit have been making big investments in protective gear, technology and equipment as they work to make sure patients and staff are protected from COVID-19.

But the changes, which can vary greatly by office, are not all required and are being done at the discretion of each dentist and orthodontist, raising the question of what risks you face at your next appointment and what you need to know before you go in.

Closed lobbies, virtual paperwork, tele-health appointments, fewer patients and protective gear like disposable gowns, masks, shields and gloves are common changes among some metro Detroit dentists and orthodontists. Others have gone beyond that, adding higher-tech improvements like aerosol remediation devices and air purifiers that better filter the particles that come out of our mouths that put us at risk for catching COVID-19.

Dentist’s TikTok hack for making face masks fit better goes viral

CLOSE

This is how often you should wash your cloth face mask.

USA TODAY

As health officials continue to urge people to wear masks in public, a dentist in Canada has shared a genius hack for making face masks fit better.

Olivia Cui typically shares dental health tips and offers entertaining insight on what its like working as a dentist on TikTok. But late last month she posted a 60-second clipshowing that with loose-fitting surgical masks “the sides of your face are left very exposed to the outside.”

To make the mask fit more snugly, Cui folds the mask in half length-ways, ties a knot with the earloops on each side close to the mask, opens the mask, and tucks in the openings on the sides underneath the earloops.

“In absence of N95s, this might be a good alternative,” Cui said.

On TikTok, videos of celebrities, athletes and influencers encouraging

This Dentist’s 60-Second Hack to Make Your Face Mask Fit Better Is Going Viral

When 2020 began, most Americans likely didn’t anticipate a reality in which we’d all be wearing (or should be wearing!) a face mask while out in public. But that’s the reality of life in the age of coronavirus. In some cities and counties, face masks are required in any place where you are not able to safely social distance.

The facial coverings are, of course, recommended by the CDC to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but anyone who’s attempted to wear a surgical mask can tell you that they don’t always fits properly. Enter dentist Olivia Cuid, who shared a 60-second mask hack on her TikTok that is now going viral.

In the clip, Cuid shows you how to take a standard surgical mask and make it fit your face better—and it’s pretty fantastic. The video has already racked up over 400,000 views for good reason. “In absence of

How’s the Economy Doing? Watch the Dentists

If not for coronavirus, you’d expect your local dentist office to be doing just fine.

Dentist offices tend to be stable businesses that stick around for decades, unlike restaurants that open and close frequently. Dentists earn a healthy salary — a median of $159,000 — and offer services with no clear substitute. If you need your teeth cleaned or a cavity filled, the dentist is the only option.

This makes them, in the eyes of some economists, the perfect barometer for gauging the country’s recovery from the shock of the pandemic.

“If you look at your typical dentist office, nothing went wrong with their business model,” said Betsey Stevenson, an economics professor at the University of Michigan. “It’s just coronavirus that happened.”

The dental industry has weathered an exaggerated version of the pandemic’s economic impact, experiencing both a steeper decline and a faster recovery than other sectors. Half of all
