COVID-19 (Coronavirus) FAQs

Please view this FAQ page for information related to the new coronavirus, COVID-19.

New Clinic Hours & Closures

Beginning Monday, March 23, only the Monroe Park Campus clinic (804-828-8828) will be open.  Clinic hours will change to 10am – 3pm, Monday – Friday.

Walk-in immunization hours have been cancelled at this time.

Immunizations During COVID-19

Please do not come to clinic or go to your primary care provider for immunizations during COVID-19.  Well persons should stay home and practice social distancing.  Once the situation has improved, email notifications will be sent to students with missing immunization requirements.

Survey: Food Access & Well-Being During COVID-19

VCU students are encouraged to participate in an online survey researching food access, basic needs, and related concerns of students, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Survey responses are anonymous, and participants will be entered into a random drawing for cash compensation.  To learn more or begin the survey, click on the link above or contact Dr. Youngmi Kim at [email protected].

Student Health FAQs

University Student Health Services is a nationally accredited health care provider that offers primary care services to VCU students.  Two clinics are located on the Monroe Park and MCV campuses.  Appointments are required and may be scheduled by phone or through the Student Health Web Portal.  If you have an urgent medical need, call Student Health directly for assistance.

Who is eligible to use Student Health?  All VCU students who have paid the semester health fee may be seen at Student Health.  No health fee is required to use the Student Health Pharmacy or Immunization Services.

What does the health fee cover?  There are no co-pays for office visits once the health fee is billed each semester.  The health fee does NOT cover prescriptions, referrals, some laboratory services, imaging tests, emergency room visits, etc.

What about health insurance?  Student Health does not accept health insurance, so any additional clinic fees are self-pay. However, we strongly recommend that all students obtain health insurance to cover medical costs not included in the health fee.  If you are uninsured, check to see if you are eligible for Medicaid or consider purchasing a health insurance policy through the Marketplace.

What payment forms are accepted at Student Health?  Student Health is cashless.  Only major credit cards, debit cards, Rambucks, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay are accepted as payment methods.

Are You Covered?

Need to apply for, renew, or change your health insurance?

  • Virginia Medicaid is offering a new health coverage option for eligible low-income students.  To see if you qualify, go to www.coverva.org.  Enrollment applications for Medicaid are accepted year-round.
  • Open enrollment for the 2020 Health Insurance Marketplace will run from November 1, 2019 to December 15, 2019.  After December 15, 2019, you cannot get 2020 coverage through the Marketplace unless you qualify for a special enrollment period.

Please Check Your Web Portal Messages!

Secure messaging through the Web Portal is the primary means by which Student Health providers contact their patients.  Email contact is not considered secure and private.

  • You will receive a text notification and/or an email when a secure message has been sent to you.
  • Please do not ignore these messages as they often contain important health information, such as lab results, updates on vaccine requirements, etc.
  • Simply log in to the Web Portal with your eID and password to access (and respond) to your secure messages.

Take-Care-Of-Yourself Checklist

It’s a good idea to have a small supply of self-care items in your dorm room for minor illnesses. Make yourself a DIY sick kit with the following items (which are available at low prices through the Student Health Pharmacy):

  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Bandaids
  • A digital thermometer
  • Pain relievers, like ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • An antihistamine pill for allergic reactions (Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin, or Allegra)
  • Cough and cold medications

The Well

The Health Promotion & Well-Being Center (The Well) empowers all students to move toward optimal health by finding a balance for all aspects of wellness.  Stop by and check out the many resources offered at the Well.  Examples include:

Students With Disabilities

VCU students who have a documented disability and require special accommodations can contact Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO). Health Sciences students should contact the Division for Academic Success (DAS) for assistance.‌
